H.L. Hunley and Tybee Island (Feb.22, 2020)

We were staying in a Hilton Garden Inn and the bed was soft and comfy, I wanted to lounge around in it longer but I also wanted to get going.

We picked this up at the store last night, orange cream yogurt, it was good.
We packed up after snacks then hit the road.
I first wanted to stop at a Pandora for a charm and I'd found another location nearby so we headed there first.

It was in a really nice shopping area.
I bought myself a souvenir charm then we walked around to see what other stores were around.
There was an Old Navy where I got a couple things for myself and for Baby F.

We were super stoked when we saw there was a Grimaldi's and we just had to take advantage of the opportunity so we went there for some breakfast/lunch.
We've never been to the original one in New York but we have been to two different locations in Las Vegas.

They all kind of have the same decor.

It took kind of a long time but if finally showed up and I was happy to see it.
We got a white one.

We also got a pepperoni one.
They hit the spot!

Next we were off to see the HL Hunley submarine.

I'd never heard of it before but My Honey was quite excited.

The HL Hunley is renowned as the first submarine to successfully sink and enemy vessel in combat during the Civil War.

It was a hand cranked submarine that actually sank 3 times, the final time after it completed it's mission sinking the Housatonic in 1864.
It stayed below the ocean until it was found again in 1995 and it was brought up in 2000.
This is a replica and this was the actual size.
Can you imagine being inside this thing sitting side by side with 7 other grown men, under the water, likely in complete darkness?
No way you would have gotten me in there.

It had a crew of 8 and all 8 crew members were found to be still at their positions, seemingly as if nothing had happened.
The first time it sank was right at dock and 5 out of the 8 crew members were killed.
The second time it sank was during a demonstration and all 8 crew members were killed.
I have no idea how they got 8 more crew members to go down in it but they did and they were volunteers.
They were some very brave and courageous men, that's for sure.
Of course, they all ended up perishing as well.

They built this whole building just to house it.

They keep it submerged in a tank that they can drain when they want to do restoration work on it.

This is the tiny hatch where the crew would have gotten into the vessel.

The restoration has been ongoing since it was recovered and there is still a few years more worth of work to do.

It was a guided tour that we went on through the museum and this was our guide.

Just some shots of inside the vessel after sitting at the bottom of the ocean for over 100 years.

Looking for clues.

H L Hunley was one of the crew members who perished in the vessel the second time it sank.

They still aren't 100% certain what happened that night, maybe they'll never know for sure.

A keel block,

The legend of the gold coin.
The story goes that a confederate soldier was shot during a battle but he had a gold coin in his pocket that saved him.
He kept that gold coin on him forever after.
He was one of the final crew members on the Hunley when it sank.

They actually recovered the gold coin from the wreckage.

You can even see that it is actually bent.

This is the actual dimensions of the vessel.

Talk about close quarters.

Comparing his height to that of the crew.
He would have been one of the tallest.

Another replica - these kiddos were enjoying it.

There was also a replica of the cranks that you could try it and a little video to go along with it.

We gave it a try.
It would have been a lot of work.

A model of the submarine.

Pictures of some of the crew.

They always look so stern in these old pictures.

I do see the beginnings of a grin at the corners of his mouth.
I enjoyed the museum and so did My Honey.
He said he'd never thought that he would see it for real one day so I'm happy we were able to do it.

We left the museum and hit the road to Georgia.

We stopped for a bathroom break at a gas station that sold fried chicken and it looked so good that we just had to try some.
It was very good!

Next we saw a pie place so we had to stop and try that too.
It was a cute little shop that sold pies, preserves and honey and some knick knacks too.

We got a pie of course.

It was a pretty pie - it was just so so though as far as taste goes.

Another bridge similar to the one in Charleston.

I tried to get a picture of the Savannah sign as we drove by.
We actually booked a night by the beach so we won't be staying in Savannah until tomorrow night, just driving through until tomorrow.

Just a beautiful tree I saw along the way.

This is the kind of landscape I think of when I think of South Carolina and Georgia after all the Vlogs we watched before coming here.

My Honey booked us a room in Tybee Island for the night which is a beach community only about 20 minutes from Savannah.

Pretty colour for a house.

We arrived in Tybee Island and found our hotel.
We stayed at the DeSoto.

Our room.
Thankfully it's the off season so the room wasn't too expensive.
The hotel clerk told us that Tybee is a town of 3000 people but in the summer season, it jumps up to 30,000.
Wowzers!

We had a balcony with a partial ocean view.

Not bad.

After we checked in and dropped of our luggage, we headed out for a walk.
There are tons of stores with anything you might possibly need for a day at the beach.

We wanted to go for a walk on the beach and they were going some work on the beach at our hotel so we had to walk down a few blocks to get access to the beach.

We found it no problem.

The beach was lined with hotels.

It was the widest beach I think I've ever seen.
Beautiful.

Welcome to Tybee Island.

Since it's the off season, there weren't really that many people around which suited us just fine.

Enjoying a walk on the beach with My Honey.

There was a bit of a breeze but it was nice.

Walking the beach is so peaceful.

The sun was starting to set and it was so pretty.

This little fellow was enjoying the beach with all of his friends too.

There were these swings all along the beach that you could use if you wanted.

We could see a big pavilion and pier at the far end of the beach so we decided to walk down to it.

The pier was super long, it had to be to cover the beach, it was so wide.

There were a few other people here and there out enjoying a walk on the beach too.

We made it to the pavilion as the sun was setting.

We walked out to the end of the pier.

We were able to watch the sunset from the pier.

There are few things I find more peaceful than watching the waves roll in on a beach, it's very calming and soothing to me.

Add in a sunset and what could be better?

Well sharing it with this guy of course - No other place I'd rather be in the world than right here, right now with My Honey.

We stayed and watched the sunset then we headed back to the pavilion.
I bet this place is just hopping in the summer season.

The hotel clerk had given us a map of Tybee Island and we weren't far from a cluster of stores and restaurants so we walked that way, checked it out and looked for a spot to have some supper.

We settled on Fannie's on the Beach.

Turns out it was Mardi Gras festival time here in Tybee Island this evening,
The beads were out.

I don't get the mascot, no polar bear that know of wants to be hanging out at a hot beach.
Maybe that's the point?

The menu consisted mainly of seafood, no surprise there.

The tablecloth was paper and they gave us crayons so I had to put my artistic skills to good use.

We had these ahi tuna bites as an appetizer.

I had clams and fries.

My Honey had fish tacos.

The food didn't blow me away or anything, not sure if I'd go back.

We walked back to the hotel, we saw a few Mardi Gras revellers along the way.

We say this party 'boat' parked across the street with the tunes just a blaring.
Looks like all aboard were having a great time!

It was a bit of a walk back to our hotel but it was a nice evening and the fresh air was nice.

They had Up TV on the TV in our hotel room so I got to watch an episode of Bringing Up Bates which made me totally happy.

Off to Savannah in the am.

That is all for today, until next time, be happy!
