Billie Bob's Barbecue, Louisville, Kentucky and Hot Brown - Tennessee Trip Day 6 (May 24, 2024)

We are leaving our gorgeous spot in Pigeon Forge and I'm kind of sad but looking forward to the new adventure, the new spot.
We are off to Louisville, Kentucky today.

I took some last photos of the view from the back balcony before we left.

Sat out there and had my coffee this morning and it was so peaceful.

Jason picked this artificial snow at the Christmas store for Freya - this little container makes a bucketful of snow just by adding water and mixing which is totally up Freya's alley.

We set out and made a quick pit stop in Rocky Top because I've always wanted to go there.

It ended up being just a small town with the mountains all around it so very pretty.

We took a drive through the town, saw a mural.

We stopped at a gas station to get some snacks and saw the cops there - they had a truck blocked in and were arresting the driver as we left and he seemed pretty chill about the whole thing.

The drive to Louisville was pretty, we left the mountains of Tennessee and traded them for some rolling hills in Kentucky.

We did make one more stop on the way at Billy Bob's Barbecue & Amish Deli in Springfield, Kentucky.
We watch a food vlogger - Goodall's Country Kitchen - and he advertises this place all of the time.

It looks like its in a house - it has plants and food and porch swings for sale.

The main reason for our trip to Billy-Bob's was for sorghum.
Jason's been looking for it for years to no avail so when we saw they sold it here, we just had to come and get some.

They had some other interesting things for sale as well, like Frog jam which is
Fig, Raspberry, Orange and Ginger

We ordered something to eat from their kitchen.

Their dining area was very old timey - kind of being in someone's house with garage sale and donated furniture that all mismatched.
The owner was sitting in the store watching tv - all stuff about Trump.
We are definitely in Trump country here.

He came in and sat and chatted with Jason and I for a bit.
We told him we'd heard of the place because of Goodall's Country Kitchen so he was telling us a bit about Barry Goodall and how many people stop by because of him - he was impressed.

The cook brought out our food when it was ready.
I got the Amish Liver Cheese sandwich.
I think he was surprised when I ordered it - he told me that the taste isn't for everyone but I like liver so I knew I would like it.

There it is all put together - I did like it.

We tried the pulled pork and brisket sandwich and it came with a couple sides, we got beans and potato salad.
When the cook came out and brought it to us, he ended up sitting down and chatting to us for quite some time.
We got talking about travelling and we were asking about things to check out nearby and mentioned that we were on our way to Louisville and he recommended that we did not got to Louisville, said he and his wife stayed away from the place.
Jason asked why and he said due to crime.

We had just booked a hotel right in downtown Louisville for 2 night so we were concerned.
We checked and it was non-refundable so we decided we'd go anyway and spend 1 night and it was really awful, we'd just leave and take a hit for the second night.

As it turned out we ended up loving Louisville and were so glad that we went - we felt very safe the whole entire time no matter the time of day or night.

We checked into our room - it was spacious with a comfy king size bed.

It had a little kitchenette.
After a quick refresher we got ready and headed out to check out the city.

Right away we noticed that it was nice and clean.

It wasn't overly busy for a city.

Downtown Louisville

Lots of trees lining the streets in the downtown area.

I like the nice lanterns.

Muhammad Ali is from Louisville so they have a Muhammad Ali center and lots of nods to him around the city.

The river was just a couple blocks down from our hotel so we walked down to it then walked along it.
We were under a highway and it was kind of a dirty, dingy area.
We were thinking that if this was the river walk area then it wasn't very nice but we just kept walking.

We came upon a paddlewheel boat - we thought maybe we'd try to go for a sail on this one while we were there.
We didn't end up doing that - kind of forgot about it.

We came to a park next and it was all blocked off - looked like they were setting up for an event or something (ended up being a concert).
This was on the outside of everything that was gated in.

This was just past where the set up as all going on - some kind of chicken display or something.

We could see this ball arena across the street.

We kept walking and came to more park area but this was open so we could walk through it and it was so pretty.

It was a lovely evening for a walk.

There's just something about water sparkling on the water isn't there?

There were a couple of bridges - if any of them are pedestrian friendly, I'm sure Jason and I will make a point o walking across it.

There were lots of benches all around the park to sit and enjoy the view.

A cool statue - I'm not sure who he is.

And some words of wisdom carved into the walls.

There were these swings all over too.

So of course we had to test them out.

It was so nice and peaceful.

We kept walking and came upon a splash park.

Then a boat dock.

The path seemed to just keep going and going.

I do enjoy a tree lined path.

After our nice walk in the park we were hungry so it was time to get some food in our bellies.
Jason said that Louisville is known for the Hot Brown sandwich and it originated at The Brown so we figured we'd go right to the source to try it out.

b
It's a hotel - it looked a bit fancy.

We weren't sure if it the restaurant was open because it didn't look like it was but we asked and it was open, it's actually up the stairs on the inside.
We were worried there may be a dress code but thankfully there wasn't.

The inside of the hotel was very beautiful - we took the carpeted stairs up to the restaurant floor.

There was some old fancy furniture pieces, so detailed.

It was very grand.

The tall arched windows with the fitted curtains was a big wow factor.

The hallway area right beside the seating area.
I bet the rooms in this hotel are fancy.

Another fancy piece.
They were using this one as a bar.

The ceiling was just stunning!

My Honey

Moi!

Jason got the hot brown.
It's an open faced turkey sandwich with fresh tomato and bacon covered in mornay sauce and then broiled then looks like they put some cheese up on top.
It was very good.

The waiter suggested we get the fries to dip in the sauce - they were crispy fries and they were great for sopping up the sauce.

I went for the shrimp and grits.

We were full but crammed in some dessert anyway.
This was bread pudding with cherries.

This was Derby Pie - it was my favorite of the two.

Afterwards we walked around and checked out the city a bit more - it has quite a vibrant night life.

Cool art on the ground.

This place had live entertainment and restaurants.

It was a big open area in there.

There's the stage - there wasn't anyone playing at the moment.

The weather was so nice and warm even though it was later in the evening.

The first of many horses we saw while in the city.
I think a nod to the Kentucky Derby - they were all over the place with different themes.
Such a great idea.

That's all for today, until next time, be happy!
