A Day in Camrose and Burnt Eyeballs (July 20, 2025)

Jason got up early and headed out for a run - he wanted to get a long one in.

I had wanted to get out for one too and would have had time when he got back but it was raining outside and I just didn't feel like getting out and running in that.

Instead I just stayed in bed with Freya and did some internet surfing.

I saw that Dr. Ilya passed away.
He was a vet in Barrhead that I took my animals too.
He just retired in January and I was so bummed because I really like him.
He was rough and gruff but honest and fair.

When I first moved out to Alberta one of my cats got really sick.
He took her and kept her for a week and took care of her.
She ended up not surviving in the end but I know he did all that he could.

I didn't really have any money at the time so he let me just pay him what I could when I could until my bill was paid off and he didn't charge me near what any other vet would have so I always appreciated that.

I've been feeling the need to get creative lately - I was kind of feeling off of crafting for a bit after the craft show last year.
These look like something cute and fun to make.

I also really liked the style of these pillows for some reason?

I want to get into painting with water colors too and I love this.
I thought it might be fun to try to recreate.

Freya picked out a new outfit last night and she's wearing it today.

I told her to smile so I could take her picture then I took a selfie (she does that to us all of the time).
Then I showed her - she got a kick out of it.

Jason found this coffee house that also had food so we went there for breakfast.

Fika.
Freya wanted to go to a 'real' restaurant for breakfast - I assured her it would be good and if nothing else, it would have bacon.

She was not impressed and it did not have bacon.
We stayed anyway and it was ok but not like 'real' breakfast.

Showing us tricks while we were waiting for our food.

It was a cute little place.
It has some interesting coffee concoctions that I would have liked to try - I wasn't feeling that adventurous today and just wanted regular coffee.

I liked the decor - it was nice and clean and bright and there was some interesting art on the wall.
Jason really liked this picture.

After breakfast we went to do some shopping.
The Halloween stuff is out at Winners already.
When we were in there, Freya leaned on a shelf and it kind of bent.
It was full of candles and they all went crashing to the floor.

The staff were really good about it - poor Freya felt really bad and was so embarrassed.
I was trying to tell her it was just an accident and not to worry but she didn't even want to talk about it.

We spent the afternoon shopping then we wanted to get some supper before heading home.
Jason found a place called Marrow that had great ratings so we headed there.
It was in an old field building - a big old brick building - I loved it.

This mural was on the building next door - I like it.

My little model.

The place was just beautiful inside.

I loved the decor.

There was some really cool artwork on display that you could purchase if you wanted (it was WAY out of my price range).

There were a lot of pieces by this same artist and I liked them all.

Another piece.

And a few more.

It was huge inside and felt roomy and airy but cozy at the same time if that makes sense.

There were three tv's in the corner where we were sitting (you can see them here on the top left) and they were all playing old black and white movies.
Freya was not impressed.

For whatever reason, she just did not like the restaurant.
As soon as we were seated she said 'Why did you bring me here? I wanted to go to a real restaurant'.

So I asked her what she didn't like about it.

She said she didn't like the animals looking at her while she was eating (there were several animal heads mounted on the wall, a deer and a big giant moose right by us) and also, that 1980's is burning my eyeballs (she was referring to the black and white movies on the tv).
OMG.
That cracked me up so much.

Jason said ok, well let's just go then and Freya says 'Well we already ordered, we might as well stay now'.
We'd only ordered drinks by that point but we were happy to stay.
She was happier too once we gave her the option to leave - she didn't really want to but I think it made her feel better that it was an option.

I'd just bought Freya a toy 'hair dresser' set and she had to bring it in with us so she could do Jason's hair.

Ha ha.

The place was nearly empty - I'm not sure why.
The waiter said it is usually hopping in there.

She moved and sat by me so she didn't have to look at the moose or the tv's and then she proceeded to make videos while we waited for our food.

The food has arrived!
Freya took this picture.

I got these deep fried feta cheese sticks.

They had brussels sprouts so you know I had to try those.

Jason ordered the brisket poutine for Freya but he and I ended up eating it.

It was fantastic, salty but not too salty and the gravy was delicious.
We put a really good dent in it.

He also ordered the Marrow burger which was two smash patties, bacon and an egg and all the other regular toppings.
It was really good.

Freya didn't want anything on the menu so we just ended up ordering her a side of bacon and she was happy with that.

Much happier girl after getting some bacon in her belly.

We made one more stop at Walmart to pick up a few things before hitting the road for home.

It's a 3 hour drive back to Swan Hills - I actually thought it was further so that was good.

Freya made herself a little fort in the backseat and then promptly fell asleep.

She slept like this the rest of the drive home.

The canola is blooming and it looks so pretty.
It's hard to get a nice picture while we are driving - It was raining so I didn't want to stop and get out but next time, I think I'll stop and take some nice pictures.

It was after 9:30 when we got home - Jason took Freya home but Kody and Haylee were already in bed so he brought her back and she spent the night.

That's all for today, until next time, be happy!
