Day 4 - MA to RI - Side Door Bagels, Thrift Shopping, Cranberry Bog, Newport Mansions, Fresco (Oct.11, 2026)

We had to be out of our hotel by 10 am this morning.

My Fitbit was still on Alberta time so I was lounging around thinking we had all the time in the world until Jason let me know it was 9:45 and not 7:45 like I thought so it was a scramble to get out the door but we did it.

We walked over to a Bagel spot on Maint St, Side Door Bagels.

Jason had what they called the Barnstable Village.
It had homemade hummus, brie, arugula, dill, bacon, and pickled onion on an poppyseed bagel.

I just had a sesame seed bagel with green onion cream cheese.

We went for a little walk around town after we ate.
We happened upon the HyArt area - just an artsy part of town I guess.
They had the rock wall painted.

This is the other side of the same wall.

The light posts along the walkway were painted.

As were the benches.

Even the pylons were painted.

There were cute little huts with vendors inside selling their wares.

Had to do it.

Made Jason do it too and he got the pirate expression perfectly!

The Kennedy's presence can be felt all over around here.

Small park near the harbour.

It's so picturesque here.

This is where the ferry comes and goes to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard possibly as well.
I wish we had more time, I would have liked to pop over there to check it out.

These flowers were just covered with bees.

Love the buoys on top of the posts - neat idea.

Boats are a big thing around here, understandably.

These hydrangeas are so pretty.

I didn't know it but they start out light green/white then turn to pinkish/green in the fall.

Giant hedge of daisies.

You can tell some of the houses here have been exposed to the salty air but I love the weathered look of them.

Randomly at the edge of a private residence.

They also had a giant whale.

A really cool this thing too - no idea what it is.

We walked back down Main St. to see if the shops were open yet, I wanted to get myself a Cape Code top for a souvenir, one of the shops had this awesome ship in the window.

Love the little sign "I love big boats and I cannot lie" - ha ha.

Jason noticed this - he always seems to notice things that I do not.

In the window of a book store, a possum reading a copy of Moby Dick.

Little racoon doing some painting.

Town clock.

I had this idea for my travel journal to do a page with a map of the world on it and Jason suggested looking at a second hand store for some old maps and there were a few in town so that's where we went to next.

This one was super nice, very clean and organized inside.
There was lots of nice furniture too - If I lived nearby here, I'd be shopping here all the time.

I found this giant Atlas of the World.
It is very heavy so I'm going to cut it up and just keep the parts that I want, I feel a little bad about it but they only charged me 2 bucks for it so it's perfect for what I'm looking for.

There was a Cranberry Bog next door so we went and checked it out.

I've never seen a cranberry bog in person before.

They were selling fresh cranberries.

Nice little set up - lots of people were taking pictures with the cranberries.

There was a path you could walk all around the cranberry field so we did that.

This section was flooded.

Just look at all those cranberries.

This is the machine they use to harvest the cranberries.

Makes me wonder what is around the bend.

They had these fins set up in a few spots so it looked like there were sharks swimming in the cranberry bogs.

We were off to Rhode Island today, first stop was Newport to look at the mansions there, I guess it's a thing.
It was about an hour and a half drive and it was dreary and drizzling rain (they've had more snow back home so I'm not in any way at all complaining about the rain, I'll take it any day over snow).

We found the area where the mansions were - it was hard to drive by them and be able to see anything because most of them had high fences or hedges.
There was traffic because it's right in town so you couldn't just crawl along, you had to go with the flow.

So we decided to park at a grocery store - we popped in there to use the washroom and get a drink then we walked down the road to check out the mansions.

Some of them were pretty amazing.

Makes me wonder about who lives in them and what do they do.

This is just the fence around this one - so fancy.

Yup, looks pretty nice.

Some of them you could barely see and it was hard to get pictures of the houses but even the grounds were beautiful.

They were all different styles too which I really liked.

Couldn't even see the house that was on this property.

I love the big wrap around porch on this one,

Another totally different style - it's hard to see from these pictures just how big these homes actually are.

Yet another style.

And another.

This one was giving me Downton Abbey vibes.

This one had these little statues up on the corners of the roof.

It started raining even harder while we were out walking so we were pretty soaked when we got back to the car.
They had a cliff walk in Newport that I wanted to do but I didn't think it would be that fun in the pouring rain so we skipped it and decided to skip the Thomas Dambo trolls too until tomorrow.

Instead we decided to just head straight to our hotel and chill.
We are going to stay at this place for two nights so I'm looking forward to not having to get up and rush to pack in the morning.

On the way out of Newport, we passed through the downtown area and it looked really nice, lots of shops and restaurants.
I think I'd like to come back some day and spend some time here, I think there would be lots to see and do.

It was about a half hour drive over to our hotel - we were both hungry so we looked up places to eat - I was craving some pasta so Jason found a spot that looked good.

Fresco.

There were quite a few people there in the restaurant - not a huge place but just a perfect size.

Jason.

They brought complimentary bread and oil to the table - I forgot to take a picture of it first before we dived in.
The bread was hot and delicious.
The oil had chili flakes on it and a little pile of parmesan - I've never had it served like that before and it was fantastic.

Jason had the clam dish, it had linguini and a lemony sauce - it was very liquidy.

I had the gnocchi with a pink vodka sauce with short rib and a clump of ricotta.
It was so delicious - I couldn't eat a lot and it was a bit disappointing because it tasted soooooo good!
I took the leftovers with me back to the hotel - I could not leave it behind.

Back at the hotel room, I got to work on the travel journal.
I love how this page turned out - just like I imagined using a map from the atlas.

Then I did this post for today's activities.

I'm loving doing this so much - it is so fun to get my creative juices flowing.
I wish I'd started doing this years ago.

Now I'm excited to get home and start working on Freya's fairy journal and a reading journal for next year.

The girls called us - it was nice to talk with them.
Eden set up the camera and did a dance for us which Jason video'd with his phone.
It was so funny - I keep watching it over and over and it cracks me up every time.

She is so funny.

Step total.

That's all for today, until next time, be happy!
