Reykjavik by Scooter, Sea Baron, Hallgrimskirkja Church and Aktu Taktu (Aug.24, 2022)

We didn't get to bed last night until after 3 am so needless to say, we slept in pretty late this morning.

It was after noon before we finally headed out.

We didn't really know what we wanted to do today so we decided for now to just rent a couple of scooters.

We'd gotten the app the other day so you can just look at the map to see where there are scooters available and what battery power they have left on them.

There are tons of scooters everywhere!

there just so happened to be two of them together a street over from our VRBO so we went and hopped on those and headed downtown.

What a great way to get around!
It's like walking in that you get to go places that you can't with a car but it's faster than walking.
I had mine going as fast as 25 mph down the hill by the water here.

The other great thing about it is that you can just park anywhere, check out what you want to see then hop back on and be on your way.

So we just zipped all over checking things out.

We were able to stop for a close up view of the famous Sun Voyager.
There's Jason.

There's me!
We've driven by this pretty much a couple times every day as it's on the main drag but it's the first time we were actually able to get an up close look at it.

Reykjavik waterfront and The Sun Voyager.

We continued on into town and there is this really pretty little lake right down town.
We actually started the marathon right from beside here.

It has walkways all around it.

This is kind of the downtown section.

Then looking over the other way, more of a residential section.

Swans coming in for a landign on Tjomin Lake, Reykjavik, Iceland.

There was a grassy area on the other side of the lake with a neat statue.

Just a close up of the statue.

We walked all around the lake and this is just a view from the other side looking back into town.
You can see the famous church off in the distance there to the right.

Swans coming in for a landing on Tjomin Lake, Reykjavik.

This was a statue that was just in someone's yard.
Look how green the grass is.

We made it all around the lake back to the downtown area and not sure what this building was but it was kind of built kind of over the lake.

Another cute little viking/troll outside of a shop.

We happened upon a really nice looking town square area.

Exploring is so fun, you never know what you'll come across.

Like this pig in racy sleepwear outside of a restaurant.

Lots of random art pieces.

I like how the door on the corner looks like someone took a bite out of the building.

Just a red cow with a yellow stripe.

A really cool mural.

Being on the scooters made it so easy to just stop and take pictures whenever we wanted.

We decided to pop over and see what the line up at the Sea Baron looked like and it wasn't that bad so we decided to wait.

We waited about a half hour in line, that was it.

You could pick where you wanted to sit and because it was nice out, we opted to sit outside.

The Sea Baron - famous for their lobster soup.

So of course you know we had to try it and we didn't share, we each got our own bowl.

Trying Sea Baron's famous lobster soup.

It came with a few slices of fresh bread which was delicious.
Total bread lover over here.

We did share the grilled sea trout they had on special and it was very good.

Then we hopped back on the scooters to do more exploring - there were just cool things to see every where you looked.
Like these awesome corbels - I am a huge corbel fan, weird, I know.

Jason is so observant, he always notices little things like this funny sticker on a wall.

The streets of Iceland - they aren't afraid of color here.

The street we happened upon had lots of murals.

Who doesn't love a good mural?

Love how a couple of them are wearing the Icelandic sweaters.

We wanted to go back to Hallgrimskirkja Church and go up to the tower to have a look around so that's what we did next.

These are just some views of Reykjavik from up in the church.
You could walk all around it so you were treated to amazing 360 degree views.

Looking out the front of the church, this road turns into the rainbow road down at the bottom but you can't really see it in the picture.

View of Reykjavik from Hallgrimskirkja Church Tower.

Another view of Reykjavik from Hallgrimskirkja Church Tower.

More views, this time on the back side.

Up to the right of this picture is where our VRBO was.

Looking out into the main harbour we passed by every day our way to the down town.

This is the very back of the church.

Just a few more of the views from the sides.
Reykjavik is actually a pretty big city.

I love all the different colored houses.

One last look.

The actual bell in the bell tower.

The clock.

The basalt columns we saw at Black Sands beach were inspiration for the architecture of this church.

We had a look on the inside of the church too.

There was a gigantic organ in there - beautiful.

We were close to the bakery we stopped at the other day, Braud & Co, so we went back to try a few more things.

This was a raspberry cream cheese danish - fantastic!

And this was some type of cinnamon roll, it was good but the danish was the clear winner of the two.

We continued our zipping around town and saw another amazing mural.
We spent the whole afternoon just scootering around and close to supper we decided to head back to our VRBO.

There was this place, Aktu Taktu, that was on the way and we decided to stop and check it out.
It is Iceland's version of MacDonald's but way better we discovered.

Parked our rides just outside!

The decor kind of reminded me of a fast food joint.

They served burgers and fries and some others things too.
We each had a burger and some fries and the food was fabulous.
Way better than any other fast food hamburger that I've ever had.

When we got back to our place, Jason let his stomach settle a bit then he headed out for a run.
I did not.
I felt a little guilty but I said I'd like to take at least a full week off after running the marathon to let my groin heal.
It's not as sore as it was but I'm still limping and medicating every 4 hours or so with both Tylenol and Advil.

Jason ran 10k - he's a machine - I'm proud and jealous at the same time!

When he got back, we headed to a 24 hour grocery store for some snacks and more bagels for breakfast.
We also stopped for ice cream.
Icelander's love socializing at pools and ice cream shops.
I could totally get on board with that.

When we got back to the room, we went for a little walk so I could get my 13,000 steps in.
Then we had snacks and stayed up late watching 2 more episodes of Midnight mass.

We saw some chip flavors that we'd never seen before so of course we had to try them.
Sour Cream flavor.

Paprika flavor.

Sweet Chilli Pepper.

I liked all of them.

That's all for today, until next time, be happy.
